I just think Vernon is more worried about looking bad and what other people think than being worried over Petunia . I do not think Vernon knows how to care or love he just cares about looking good and having money . The Dursleys are all vary vain and only care about how much they got not about each orther . so no I do not think Vernon is worrying over Petunia

Having re read Chapter one now I've noticed something I didn't really see before. Vernon's main concearn while noticing all the strange happenings is Petunia's reaction. In a way he's more worried how she'll react than his own response. From Pottermore we know that Petunia was hugely jealous of Lily and I get the sense that Vernon knows this and is wanting to keep Petunia from being upset.

I know we're led through the books to hate the Dursleys but with this I almost felt for Vernon and saw in a small way that he might love Petunia and want to protect her.

Seeing all the strange things all Vernon could think about what will the neighbours think would chapter 1 says that the Dursleys were worried what the neighbours would say if the Potters turned up so Vernon is not worried about Petunia he does not like anything different or things doing things they should not being doing .

Oh , I think Vernon loves petunia. He cares about his family, certainly.

Yes in a way but what would he have done if Dudey would have magical powers as well as Harry would he have teated him the same way ? I think he would have at the end of the day becaues Vernon Dursley hate anything that he thinks is different yes Vernon is worried about it comeing out that he has got a wizard liveing in his houes

I don't think they'd treat Dudley the same way as Harry at all. They would have had to come to terms with it, sure. But I think it would make Dudley seem even more special in their eyes eventually.

Yes if Dudley does something it is right but if Harry does the same thing it is wrong which is so unfair it makes me angery . I think Vernon would not been happy about haveing a wizard in the family but I think Petunia would have lived going to Hogwarts though Dudley becaues it is the next best thing to going herself .

I definitely think that Vernon loves his close family, this may be his one and only redeeming feature, as it is for the Malfoys (and the two families clearly have a lot in common, as Potter1977 pointed out in another thread, they're like two sides of a same coin, muggle side and wizard side). He doesn't reject Petunia when she tells him about her sister. That doesn't stop him from thinking that Lily's a freak, but he's still willing to accept Petunia, even if finding a wife with no magical background at all would be a lot less trouble for him. As for Dudley being magical, I'm pretty sure they would have accepted it in the end. Petunia might have been secretly more happy about this than Vernon, but in no way would they have treated Dudley the way they treated Harry.
