Hi there,
I have two questions. First, I once wrote an editorial for the main Mugglenet site and was wondering if it could be shared here again. I'd tweak it a bit, but it was more of a character-based piece than a "what's going to happen in book seven?" piece. I understand if you'd rather not go that route, but it was a decent editorial that is buried in six years with of archives now and I'd sort of like to share it again. :)
Also, how critical can we be of stuff? For example, I'm wondering why she set up her timeline in certain ways and feel like I can make a good argument for it working much better another way in terms of character development. Is that off limits (if that even makes sense, lol)?
Oh, and a third question while I'm at it. I can see the 'Recommendations' function in my account info, but where can people go through recommendations on the site? Is there a link or anything that I'm just not seeing? Might be a good idea if there isn't. ;)
Thank you!
~Gina :)

Sure Gina. What's the link to the editorial? Yes you can be as critical as you like. We're working on the recommendations function and a few other things fast as we can.

I read the essay about Remus and Sirius, it was listed not for under age 13. I was really uncomfortable about the subject matter. It's nice that you put an age limit, but I think this type of essay shouldn't be permitted. You open it up to other people critizing each other. And since you have limited moderation, I still think you are going to have problems with people posting their opinions. COS prides themselves on being family friendly, but I don't see that here.

Oh and thank goodness for that! C o S is great, but we don't need another one. I for one would like to be able to have some discussion that ventures away from '"Acceptable" at times. I think when it comes to forums, people need to develop some thick skins, as well as following TOS. I would not like to see a new forum come in with a promise to be "Family Friendly" when there are so many like that, and not nearly as many for adults who want to be more straightforward and less self editing.

How do I follow my own posts? Is there a simple way to see all the threads I posted in and what pages and posts?

I think the forum should have a chapter by chapter section. I think there is tons of great perspective on this forum, but if there are too many replies on each topic with too few topics, it's going to get very difficult to keep things organized.

Maybe add for each book a forum section for each chapter. It will end up being a lot of sections, but if Alohomora! is all about analysis and deep reading ( :) ) then I think it would be pretty good!

We ourselves have been toying with this idea for some time now. I think that it will happen eventually, but at the moment, seeing as we are so new, we want to give the forums time to grow and flesh out before dividing all of the posts. It has also been brought up that having individual chapter threads might be difficult, seeing as the discussion of one topic so very often leads to another, which may or not be within the same chapter. Thanks for the comment though! We are always happy you hear the members wants & needs!

Yes, there is! Go to the User Control Panel (top left hand corner, under the "L" in Alohomora!. Then, click on Board Preferences, then Edit Posting Defaults. There you can choose whether or not you would like to be notified when someone replies to a thread you posted in!

A couple questions from the newbie:
1) Is this the "right" kind of forum (in general, not this thread, obviously!) to post those questions we've "always wondered about" (like the one about "where was harry all day") to have a group discussion on them? Or are these too abstract for a strictly academic "reading" forum?
2) If this IS the appropriate place to do this, is there any reason we have to stick to the book and chapter set that is currently on the most recent podcast? I've noticed that we can't post anything about book 2 or beyond, though as a total nerd who is always in the middle of at least ONE of the Potter books, questions like the above pretty constantly pop into my head - and not always about whatever section the podcast was about. (Like last night, I started getting deep in my own head about Crouch's character.) Does that make sense? Like, make it so that anyone can post anywhere as long as it is relevant to the book's forum they're posting in, even if it's got nothing to do with the chapters the podcast has covered so far. I really think it could open up discussion a lot more and give us a lot more to talk about - and I really think it would make it more fun. Or are we going to have to wait until the podcast has gotten through every book until we can have our choice of where and what we post?

I hope that made sense. And knowing me, I overlooked something that tells exactly why only the PS section is open for now. But I was curious, and couldn't help myself.

Having been a member on various forums for awhile, I have to agree that I think it could be difficult to separate them out, and also that it could lead to restricting conversation. (I.e. someone gets inspired about something in PS chapter 1, makes a remark about something that we don't learn about until chapter 12 or something, and then everyone says, "Sorry, not here, you should discuss that in the other section").

I'd also add that if you were to make specific chapter-by-chapter sections, it would still be a good idea to keep a "General Philosopher's Stone" section as well, rather than forcing people to choose "does my comment fit better in chapter 12, or 14?" and so on.

Perhaps it could be sufficient to simply have a set of threads in each section for chapters? To be clearer...In the PS section, have a thread titled "Chapter 1" where you discuss things specifically pertaining to chapter 1" and have it specially designated by admin/mods/what have you? And then there could also be other threads of general discussion, but in my experience, if things are split up TOO much, you lose posters because of confusion on exactly where to post. Keeping things more together fosters more community, which even on a strictly academic board, is still important, I think.

Randomly: why was the last podcast titled "Are you gonna eat that desk?" Maybe I missed something while listening, but I'm still curious as to why that title was chosen...

I feel like it was called in regards to the discussion of transfiguring the desk to a pig and then they jokingly said they wouldn't eat a pig made out of a desk.
