Episode 1: PS/SS Chapters 1-3, Yertle the Turtle

Sorry for teasing you all for so long (No we're not) but the first episode of our brand new podcast Alohomora! has finally been released! Head over to our podcast page to listen to the show directly, and we're happy to announce that you can already download us from iTunes right now!

Some highlights of the show; we lay to rest one of the first murder victims of the series, speculate wildly about wandless magic and Parseltongue, and take a look at brand-new information from Pottermore concerning the Dursleys.

Thanks to Hope Forgey for being our first guest host from the fandom on the show! If you would like to join us for an episode check out our podcast page for the details.

Next episode we'll be reading in depth chapters 4-6 of Philosopher's Stone; it should be released in approximately two weeks. Transcript

Yay! I'm very much looking forward to the podcast!
- Ani Sharmin on April 24 2012 11:30 AM

Is it just me, or is the volume of the vocals on this podcast really, really low?

I'm very excited to be able to hear it, by the way... just puzzled as to why I have to crank the volume to hear it.
- KyKid942 on April 24 2012 01:25 PM

We did have a few audio issues with this episode, but rather than try to re-record and push it back even further, we decided to go ahead with it. Having said that, they have ALL been remedied and there will be no audio issues from here on out! Thanks for listening...even with our technical problems!
- RubyWizard24 on April 24 2012 01:29 PM

Happy to listen! I'll be posting some feedback over on the Forums, too, on the content.

Thanks for confirming that my hearing hasn't started to go.
- KyKid942 on April 24 2012 02:13 PM

I really enjoyed listening to this today. I'm about to graduate college and was already planning a celebratory re-read, and now I have a bunch of people to do it with and some lovely nostalgic community to go with it.
- hprebel311 on April 24 2012 02:56 PM

Please could you do a low bandwith version? Staying in a hotel with rubbish WiFi and iTunes says it'll take 2hrs to download! Looking 4wd to listening to you guys.... xA
- Alnwickist on April 24 2012 04:42 PM

@Alnwickist -- find a Starbucks and use their WiFi. For the cost of a small cup of coffee/tea/something, you can use their WiFi for hours.
- KyKid942 on April 24 2012 05:12 PM

Thank you so much for doing this. Just finished listening to the podcast; very much enjoyed it except for the low volume quality. I was not quite old enough to be a part of the fandom when it first started so I'm glad to see it rekindle!
- sda15 on April 24 2012 06:57 PM

downloaded! going to listen now! can't wait! Congrats Alohomora for the first podcast! :D
- lovelle on April 24 2012 08:47 PM

I'm listening to it and it's so funny and interesting I love it! The ideas are lovely and it's really lively and all. Keep going.
- cloverlover on April 25 2012 02:22 AM

awesome first episode! nothing makes me happier than taking in depth about harry potter! i didnt read before listening- but in the future i definitely will! This will we an awesome re-read!!
- juliana on April 25 2012 03:30 PM

Great first episode! It was ironic that you chose the Tiny Tim version of Tiptoe through the Tulips to play. Tiny was something of a farce in the late 1960s when he had his 15 minutes of fame. He had long, goofy hair, played a tiny ukelele and sang in that falsetto voice. He married a woman named Miss Vicki live on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. The Dursleys were referred to as cartoonish in the podcast, and that's something Tiny Tim was. I must sound as old as Dumbledore knowing all this, but actually I was only about 10 at the time! Looking forward to more Alohomora!
- Silverdoe25 on April 25 2012 08:03 PM

Downloading now! Going to re-read chapters 1-3 tonight and save the podcast for the drive to work in the morning :) Thank you so much!! Looking forward to enjoying the experience all over again, this time with friends who are reading along too!
- MrsMarauder on April 25 2012 09:01 PM

I was thinking that Dubledore/Hogwarts knowing where he was is due to the Trace, especially when you consider that the ministry knows exactly where the hovering charm Dobby did took place...
- Snodge on April 26 2012 03:18 PM

Fantastic first episode y'all!!! :D I'm just going to put my two cents in here. First of all I'm sorry if it's out of order, I listened to it yesterday. Ok no, I don't think that snakes can read body language. I think that they can sense the magic and the ability to speak parseltongue within a wizard, like dolphins can sense a hurricane coming. And Hagrid, i think was the one addressing the letters to Harry, and i think he knew where in the house Harry had moved to because of the Trace like Snodge said.I also think that Vernon moved Harry because he know he was being watched and he didn't want the wizarding "authorities" to find you how badly he was treating Harry. One more thing, yes i think Mrs. Figg knew Harry's situation but only to an extent. She knew the situation with Voldemort and that Harry was famous, but i don't think she knew about the whole family blood thing. Oh and Tip Toe Through the Tulips: SCARY. That's all :)
- WannaBeWeasley on April 26 2012 07:43 PM

Just a question I was thinking about as you guys were discussing the possibility of Dudley receiving protection if Petunia were to sacrifice herself for him. Since Lily is a witch, and she and Petunia share the same blood, would that mean Petunia has some dormant magical gene, passed on to her son, that would create the possibility for Dudley to have a chance at magical protection if his mother sacrificed herself
for him?
- Rachl on April 27 2012 04:23 AM

LOVE the podcast, by the way!

Poor Yertle...
- GinnyWeasley002 on April 27 2012 09:31 AM

This podcast is just like another I know called "The Potter Pensieve"! They essentially do the exact same thing - they go through the series and examine all of the details. They've been at it for a couple years now and they're still going strong. I listen to them, and I like them because they're independent and have risen from the fandom itself, but it'll also be nice to start the series again with a different group of people. Good first episode folks!
- Andre1101 on April 27 2012 06:45 PM

Wow this was insightful. Totally exceeds my high expectations! I'm so happy to join you in this fascinating journey :)
About the Trace. It is clear that such a tracking system exist. That is how Ministry keeps an eye on underage wizards. They don't know when children use magic, but registers it near them. This means that the MoM knows the exact time and place of magical acts and the current position of the child. I used to think that they just monitors magical transference but now it seems like Ministry is able to see whereabouts of underage wizards all the time. Don't you think it can be very useful in the search of a lost child? First thing that comes to mind is Ginny in CoS. Or Hogwarts protection/high magical concentration prevents this? And do you think Hogwarts has something like that or it just uses resources of the Ministry?

I think Dudley will not be protected like a magician. It is sad, but that is just the way things works in a Muggle world. For ages the Evans family members were carriers of dormant magical gene, but until it is not active it does nothing - they had no magical abilities, they were ordinary Muggles. But Dudley has a chance to have a magical kids)
This is creepy song. Just imagine Vernon singing it...

Andre1101 , thank you! I'll definitely check it out.
- snidget on April 27 2012 08:10 PM

Awesome first episode guys! like the song ;)

@Andre1101 Hey I know them! I've been listening to potter pensieve podcast for about a year. they're hilarious! They have a smaller fandom than what mugglenet or pottercast would have...but their chapter by chapter content is just as good! They have a very nice grassroots fandom feel I think..
- Kaci_star08 on April 27 2012 09:02 PM

About how the letters were able to get to Harry, Hagrid explains at the end of The Keeper of Keys that he was allowed to use a bit of magic to follow him and get his letters to him. I'm guessing that Dumbledore expected this sort of a reaction from the Dursley's and wanted to send someone to watch over them to make sure Harry got his letter.

I also have a theory that Ms Figg knew about how important Harry was, but didn't want to treat him too well or the Dursley's might have noticed how happy he was after leaving her house and decide that he shouldn't be allowed there. Or perhaps she believes that looking at all of her cats is truly a great time.
- Inextricable on April 28 2012 02:38 PM

At the zoo, I think Harry was speaking Parseltongue to the snake. Throughout the series, Harry speaks or hears Parseltongue and doesn't immediately recognize it.
- Silverdoe25 on April 29 2012 11:43 AM

Ooh, interesting idea, Rachl!

Also, I had a thought about Mrs. Figg. In book 5, we learn that she has been in touch with Dumbledore about Harry, but that she couldn't be too nice to him or the Dursleys might suspect something. In ch. 2, Vernon makes the very first mention of his sister Marge as a potential babysitter, and I think, had they known Mrs. Figg was anything more than just a strange cat lady, they would have been much more likely to find cruel caretakers like Marge to watch him more often. At least Mrs. Figg was just boring. Marge is downright abusive. Also, if something ever slipped to the Dursleys about Mrs. Figg's slight involvement in the wizarding world, I think they might have been even nastier to Harry than they were because it would make magic seem a whole lot more pervasive than they choose to believe it is.

Anyway, loved the podcast, you guys! Reading along with everyone else here really does help keep the magic alive for me.
- Echoreyn on April 30 2012 04:06 AM

I think Dumbledore had no possible reason to suspect that the Dursleys would mistreat him so since Lily had been so loving and devoted. He knew it would be difficult not to be with his kind, but not as cruel and neglectful as turned out. (He tells them in the beginning of Book 6.) I think Harry weathered this abuse because of his natural strength of character. Remember, he inherited the Cloak from his father, indeed his ancestors, and I like to think of it as symbolizing his inate ability to protect himself including "hiding" his real feelings from the Dursleys. Also he emerged as a child with modesty and humility, both traits that helped form his character. He had not been the center of anyone's universe and usually saw things as they affected others which grew into great compassion and sympathy. His morality and goodness actually grew from the abuse he received. I think this is why she wrote his early life so tragically...that and because it would instantly put us firmly on his side from the gitgo.
- nana on April 30 2012 05:34 PM

On the subject of Parseltongue and how Harry started the conversation with the snake at the zoo...

Snakes don't hear, as such, they sense vibrations. So I think it's most plausible for Parseltongue to be a form of telepathy and inherently magical, with humans speaking Parseltongue making accompanying "hissing and rasping" sounds consciously or subconsciously as part of the articulation process, in a way similar to hearing-impaired people complementing sign language with lip movements.
- AmosTupper on May 01 2012 11:08 AM

Great podcast and love the chance to re-read. I wanted to point out that I thought that Mrs. Figg knew about Harry and the whole shebang, but she didn't treat Harry great because if she did Vernon and Petunia wouldn't bring him over. At least that's what I recall from Order of Phoenix.
I also think the way Dumbledore thought this was best for Harry to be with family and have that protection, but I don't think even he could have known how awful it would be for Harry, in fact knowing how much Dumbledore loved Harry, I think he really regretted that Harry had to go through such abuse for ten years. But Dumbledore is also very wry and he knew at the end of the books that Harry gained alot of strength by going through his tough childhood, some of which I think Dumbledore maybe hoped for.
One other point on "Tiptoe through the Tulips". They used that song in the horror movie Insidious and it was creepy as heck.
- StoneShield128 on May 01 2012 12:26 PM

Sorry for the late response but here it goes. I personally LOVE “Tiptoe through the Tulips. It reminds me of those old black and white cartoons from the 20’s with the skinny cows. And the first thing that really stuck with me was the fact that Dudley threw his turtle., I mean really?! Why is it not a bigger deal…….I think that Vernon is afraid for his wife because a part of her still longs for that world and he doesn’t want to lose her to it. I think that maybe she took Harry in as a way to have not a second chance but more control over the wizarding world. I’m sure something slipped through the years that hinted to the fact that Petunia did once long for Hogwarts, and as Vernon is so dedicated for her I would assume that by trying to ignore the letters he was trying to keep her away from reliving those feelings of rejection. “ Dudley is probably raised quite similar to other boys his age in Little Whinging. His friends acted and looked just like him. “ As for the snake I’m a strong believer that strange and since strange. Magic knows magic. Since Harry had part of Voldemoret in him which inturn caused him to be part of Nigana the snake at the zoo would have sinced the snake magic in him. Like a dog smelling a dog that was in the room before he was. “ With Mrs.Figg being a sqib she probably knows just as much as everyone else about Harry, but if she was too friendly to him the Dursleys probably wouldn’t have let her watch him. “ The letters I think are probably inchanted to be delivered the way the where to Harry. Dumbledore knew he wasn’t getting them so he did a bit of magic to make sure he did. Its said that children have “the trace” on them until they turn of age so maybe it also helps keep track of them like Prof. X’s Cerebro.
- Prof-River-Song on May 10 2012 03:15 PM

I know a few people mentioned it, but Mrs. Figg did actually tell Harry that she couldn't be too nice to him or else the Durlsey's wouldn't keep sending him there:
Harry: "Why didn't you tell me you're a Squib, Mrs. Figg? All those times I came round your house - why didn't you say anything?"
Mrs. Figg: "Dumbledore's orders. I was to keep an eye on you but not say anything, you were too young. I'm sorry I gave you such a miserable time, Harry, but the Dursleys would never have let you come if they'd thought you enjoyed it. It wasn't easy, you know…" And considering how much she knew during this scene, it leads me to believe that she was always very much in the know of what was going on. :)
