Philosopher's / Sorcerer's Stone - Chapters 13 - 14

It's time to delve into the pages of our books once more, this time to explore the mysteries of Nicholas Flamel and Norbert the Norwegian Ridgeback.

Harry takes to the Quidditch Pitch once more, this time with a rather worrying referee. The riddle of Nicholas Flamel is finally solved thanks to a chocolatey treat and Harry follows Snape into the Forbidden Forest where things aren't quite as they might seem.

As the end of term approaches, school work begins to build and exams loom. The trio discover Hagrid's got some homework of his own to take care of and we meet our first dragon! But once more Malfoy threatens to spoil the moment.

The trio contact another Weasley and answer the question: how do you get a dragon into the school without being caught? The answer... you don't.

One of my favorite books from the series is in Chapter 14...
"Malfoy got detention! I could sing!" "Don't."

There wasn't any specific precaution and distrust at that time when Voldemort was believed to have been defeated. Although dragons are quite dangerous creatures, they don't seem to be so horrifying when they are just eggs, do they? Besides, even if there were some kinf of Dark Detectors at the enterance to Hogwarts, they wouldn't reveal any dark magic in eggs. So I think you can get a dragon into the school without being caught, just carrying the egg in your pocket.

What I want to know is, what was MALFOY doing out of bed after hours?
- Elphaba26 on June 25 2012 09:23 PM

Discussing the matter of which house Hagrid belongs in, I think Gryffindor is the best choice, but Hufflepuff is also a good choice. Gryffindors are very brave and also daring. Hagrid works around creatures that most people are very scared of. He clearly isn't scared of them. In Prisoner of Azkaban before Harry really knows what Azkaban is, he says Hagrid looked terrified when he had to go to Akzaban and he is one of the bravest people he knows. So Harry also thinks he is extremely brave. He is also daring in the fact he risks getting in trouble a lot. He uses magic on Dudley, risking himself getting in trouble. He also raises animals such as dragons, which he could get in trouble for having.

I do think Hufflepuff is also a good choice because he is so loyal and hardworking which are traits Hufflepuffs generally desire. He is always loyal to Dumbledore and I don't think anyone could argue against the fact he works extremely hard as gamekeeper.

In reply to your question Elphaba26, Malfoy saw them with the dragon egg in Hagrid's Hut and probably heard their plan to get rid of it that night. He wanted to catch them.

According to Accio quotes, JKR has said Hagrid was in Gryffindor.
Malfoy was trying to get Harry, Ron, and Hermione is trouble, so he was out of bed looking for them or a teacher to tell...
- Ali Wood on June 25 2012 11:00 PM

I know he was in Gryffindor, but they were discussing a bit about if it fit him.
- Dobby101 on June 25 2012 11:03 PM

I always thought Hagrid was a Hufflepuff, until I read somewhere JKR said he was Gryffindor. He does seem to have a "devil may care" attitude toward risk and safety, especially where magical creatures are concerned. I'm guessing that's why he's a Gryffindor. Bless him.

Following in accordance with the discussion of what house Hagrid should be in: I always thought that he would be a good candidate for Ravenclaw. He was expelled from Hogwarts, yet he is accomplished in very difficult magic such as nonverbal and human transfiguration, which as we know, is a very advance and complex branch of magic taught only to NEWT students. He is also very knowledgeable in magical creatures, and shows a want to push the barrier and learn more about them than any other wizard. An example being the fire crabs. He created them, and found an effective way of studying them, all by himself, showing that he is very knowledgeable about crossbreeding species. And it is also shown that, even though he prefers dangerous monsters, he is also learned in all magical creatures including Unicorns and Hippogriffs. So, all in all, I would say that Ravenclaw would be a good fit for Hagrid.

Hello. I was wondering what everyones thoughts were on how it was possible that Charlie Weasley's friends were able to fly brooms into Hogwarts? Isn't it suppose to be impossible, except for Dumbledore because he's headmaster?
- Remus_Lupin_12 on July 06 2012 08:26 AM

Just a quick comment -- at the beginning of this reading, it was being debated as to whether or not it was Snape or Dumbledore's idea to referee the Quidditch match. At the end of the book, Quirrell tells us that Snape was the one who requested to referee that game in order to keep Harry safe.
