Going back to the sbject of whether or not the Dursley's beat Harry or not, there was a moment when Vnon was trying to rush them out of the house, Dudley tried to pack his VCR and a few other thing, then Vernon 'hit Dudley round the head'. If Vernon is willing to hit his precious son, why would't he hit Harry?

If you are badly injured while drinking the Elixer of Life, can you die that way? Does the Elixer make it so that you will live forever (while your drinking it) or make it so you will live forever as long as you are not stabed or killed in any other way?

Doesn't JKR say that Norbert started to eat rats by the bin?

I believe in a way, Merlin is refered to as a 'wizard god' as you put it.

Hagrids taste in creatures about overcoming creatures that can kill him.

Going off of why Draco has his name, I think it is truly based off of the constellation. The Black family is known for naming their children after stars, with Narcissa being the exception, and I can see Narcissa wanting to continue the tradition. The constellation Draconis is circumpolar, which means that it never sets. It is, in essence an immortal constellation. Assuming that both Lucius and Narcissa paid enough attention in astronomy, I can see them enjoying that fact. Draconis also used to contain the North Star in about 5000 BC which could symbolize a leader to many. With all that Powerful symbolizism, who wouldn't want to name their kid that?

About the Mirror of Erised and the room Harry found it in. I looked over the information in Pottermore about the Mirror and it says that it had been stored in the Room of Requirement until Dumbledore got the idea of using it for the protection of the stone. It also said that Dumbledore made modifications to it so that it could store the stone so it was not actually something the Mirror was able to do before.
The disused classroom might not actually be one, it might be the Room of Requirement. Or it might be some classroom Dumbledore chose to use while he worked on it. Maybe Harry surprised Dumbledore that first night or Dumbledore found Harry and Ron in front of the Mirror one night.

My second comments refers back to episode 2 (sorry it took me some time to catch up with you ;) ) and to the issues about Goblins, how they run the banking business but are still quite excluded from the rest of the wizarding society. I was strongly reminded of Jews in medieval and early modern Europe, before they were granted equal rights. Just as against the Goblins there were prejudices and they weren't generally part of the larger society and they were also active in money lending and changing. I never picked up on this before, thought it might be interesting.
- Sarah on July 01 2012 10:12 AM

As to what Hermione saw in the Mirror of Erised (great comment, by the way, Sarah), I have the Mugglenet book What Will Happen In Harry Potter #7, and it says that Jo said in an interview, "Well… At the moment, as you know, Harry, Ron and Hermione have just finished their penultimate year at Hogwarts and Hermione & Ron have told Harry they are going to go with him, wherever he goes next. So, at the moment, I think that Hermione would be most likely to see the three of them alive and unscathed and Voldemort finished. But I think that Hermione would also see herself closely entwined… with… another… person. I think you can probably guess who.
From this, I think that Hermione would probably feel as if Ron would never notice her, alone, and have heightened terror of what the end could mean for the trio.

About the meaning of the motto, I also wrote an essay about it a while ago that is in the Quibble section here on Alohomora, you should check it out :)

It seems to me that Dumbledore's string pulling is at least the primary reason events fall so fortuitously into line. There are several reasons I find this plausible. Dumbledore was both incredibly well informed and absurdly intelligent. This sort of combination makes it plausible that he would be able to come up with such intricate and lengthy strategies. Additionally, the fact that the wizarding community is quite small lends itself to getting important information with relative ease. It creates an environment of people who all have known each other for virtually all of their lives. Gossip spreads more quickly in groups containing smaller, overlapping groups of close friends. Now, this isn't to say that some things were not controlled by Dumbledore. That the D.A. was thus named could not have come about by Dumbledore's doing. Also, the pacing and much of the manner of the Horcrux/Hallows hunting was totally out of Dumbledore's control. Snape was helping, but there was not all that much he could do to dictate the behavior and thought processes of the trio. It could very well be that magical energy works towards some sort of greater end. But the role it plays I think would at most be a slight tipping of the odds in favor of the good--not a guarantee of the actualization of the best possible of out comes, however that would be determined.
- megaphysics on July 02 2012 01:09 AM

I believe Hagrid's fascination with dangerous creatures and his willingness to trust people stem from the same thing; being half-giant, people have been prejudiced against him all his life, expecting him to be violent etc., because this is the stereotype people have of giants. But since Hagrid is the complete opposite of the stereotype, I think he wants to give creatures with a bad reputation the chance he would like to be given himself. He doesn't want to be mistrusting because he doesn't want to be mistrusted.
Also, his father was a man who was willing to have a relationship with a giant, therefore he clearly both went against stereotypes and showed a lot of trust, and I assume he raised Hagrid this way.

I'm only at the end of the discussion of Chapter 13 at this point but I thought I'd add in my thoughts while they're in my head.

I think that gold is valuable to wizards BECAUSE it is one of Gamp's Exceptions, rather than an exception because it is valuable. Gold wouldn't be valuable any more if just anybody could produce it at any time. And I think Galleons are made out of gold. You completely undermine their economic system if anybody can create gold. It's a subtle difference but a difference none-the-less.

Voldemort needed the Stone to return him to his body. The horcruxes anchored him to the Earth when he should have died on Halloween 1981. However he lost his body. The unicorn blood strengthened him some, but he needed the stone to return him to full power.

I think Dumbledore might have been interested in Alchemy both because he likes learning and research for the sake of learning and research, and also because of the similarity between what the Stone offers to what the Deathly Hallows offer. I'm not saying he wanted to use the Stone himself, but having been interested in Hallows all his life, I can see how this would interest him also.

Wonderful podcast so far. And so long! It's great.

On the deeply conversed subject of "the Desk Pig", I would gladly eat bacon from it because it would have the nutritional value of wood. Last time I checked, wood doesn't have very much, if any, fat. Being a athlete, I would LOVE this.

Hello. I've just finished reading chapters 13 & 14 so I could be up to the same point as the podcast and I have a few questions on the chapter. Firstly I was wondering how it was possible for Charlie Weasley's friends to fly on brooms into Hogwarts grounds? Isn't this suppose to be impossible, except for Dumbledore who's headmaster and gets to do it in book six?

Also I found it funny how Hermione and Ron had prepared the Leg Locker curse to use on Snape in the match. If they had used this on him, would his legs snap together with enough force to break the broomstick he's on? Just a funny though.

You're podcast is amazingly interesting to read along with and I'm enjoying every moment.l

Pertaining to when you were discussing why Dumbledore had James' cloak...

What if Dumbledore took the cloak in fears that Voldemort would attempt to take it after killing the Potters, as a part of his search for the Deathly Hallows. At that point in the series, Voldemort already had the resurrection stone. So by killing the Potters and taking the cloak he would be that much closer to the Deathly Hallows. Dumbledore must have known this, thus taking the cloak to protect it.

Sorry for the terrible grammar in my first comment. It was really bugging me so I'm fixing it now:
Going back to the subject of whether or not the Dursley's beat Harry, there was a moment when Vernon was trying to rush them out of the house, and JKR says, "his father had hit him round the head for holding them up while he tried to pack his television, VCR, and computer in his sports bag.". If Vernon is willing to hit his precious son, why wouldn't he hit Harry?

Filch is always lurking around in the corridors at night, then cleaning and keeping an eye on the students during the day. So when on earth does Filch sleep???
- Golden Snidget on July 10 2012 07:04 PM

@Remus_Lupin I'm pretty sure it says somewhere in the series that if you're entering school grounds you can enter any way you want along as it's not a surprise. Charlie's friends were all on brooms so they could have been seen coming. Even if you're right Remus knowing Dumbledore he probably knew that they were coming and would have removed the enchantment for that night.
- Golden Snidget on July 10 2012 07:18 PM

@AlbusD In the Deathly Hallows Dumbledore assumed that Voldemort had most likely hadn't heard the tale of the 3 brothers. That'd just heard of the legend of the elder wand which was mentioned time to time in wizarding history. And we all know how Dumbledore assumptions usually quite correct. But all together that is a very good assumption of your own. Perhaps Dumbledore is wrong and you're right? Although I believe if Voldemort did see the invisibility cloak he wouldn't have seen its importance and thought he was to good for a mere invisibility cloak when he could do a dislusionment charm. But that's just what I think.
- Golden Snidget on July 10 2012 07:35 PM

I did a drawing for Norbert(a) who or where should I send it too???
- Golden Snidget on July 11 2012 07:55 PM

yes! Send it to me at noah@staff.mugglenet.com
- Noah Fried on July 12 2012 12:33 AM

Golden Snidget, I had the thought that if J.K was ever asked this question she'd probably say that 'Dumbledore knows everything that happens at school', but I hoped maybe some other explanation came up in the series that I had missed.
Thankyou for your input :)
- Remus_Lupin_12 on July 12 2012 08:28 AM

We should get Jo on the show, she's answer everything!! But, on another note, what would Hermione have seen in the mirror of erised if she was with the boys when Harry went back for the second time? It's been bugging me for a while now.
- thegoldensnitch_15 on July 12 2012 05:00 PM

@thegoldensnitch I think (but not positive) that during Hermione's first year she would've seen herself in the mirror being excepted by wizardkind. ( Or something along those lines.) I assume that because in Hermione's first years at hogwarts. She was very insecure and wanted to fit in.
- Golden Snidget on July 12 2012 05:44 PM

I was just thinking about the desk pig. If you transfigured a desk into a pig then ate it. Wouldn't that be going against Gamp's law as you can't transfigure food? Or would in be a loophole...???
- Golden Snidget on July 12 2012 07:24 PM

I personally strongly disliked Steve Vander Ark being on the show, please dont put him on again!
- Drew on July 13 2012 11:58 PM

Golden Snidget, I think it would be a loophole, because you really could eat anything, but that doesn't mean that it is healthy. You are creating an animal and then cooking and eating it, simple as that. I don't think an animal would be considered food while it is still alive, that is, assuming that transfigured animals are, in fact, alive.
- FlightQuest91 on July 14 2012 03:49 AM

Thanks FlightQuest91 I realised after I posted that Hermione said something like if you already had food you can make more or if you had something you can turn it into food.l
- Golden Snidget on July 14 2012 01:23 PM

You really need to stop referencing the films. They have nothing to do with the story.
You said Harry snapped the Elder Wand which isn't true. That was a lie put in the films.
