The Adventures of Martin Miggs the Mad Muggle as a television show. I want to see it.

do you think it was possible for Lockhart to put a spell on himself or drink a potion that would make girls love him. somewhat like the love potion Slughorn talks about in HBP but not love more like a deep obsesion. obviosly it does not work on boys. because none of the boys like Lockhart.
What do you think?
- PatronusThestral on September 24 2012 12:50 PM

Actually, Justin Finch-Fletchey considered Lockhart a hero. Besides this, PatronusThestral has a good point. I don't think he used any direct love potions, but it is mentioned that he used beauty potions, which would probably serve the same purpose as love potions, in the end.
- WitBeyondMeasure on September 24 2012 05:17 PM

I'm writing this in response to your discussion about wizards possibly using text messaging and social media to communicate. You have to remember that Chamber of Secrets is set in 1992-1993. Text messaging wasn't invented until late '92, and the World Wide Web was still in its infancy. Neither technology would be widespread and in popular use for several more years at least, so it would be impossible for the wizarding community to utilize these modes of communication at the time this book is taking place.
- SpiritAuror2 on September 24 2012 08:12 PM

In the podcast, Rosie said that it was a flaw that the train was out in the open and noticeable. I started thinking, and in one of the podcasts for book 1, the idea that 9 and 3/4 is under the Fidelius Charm was discussed. If we follow that logic, then only secret-keepers would be able to see it i.e. people who have been to 9 and 3/4 and not muggles near it.
- killey2011 on September 24 2012 08:25 PM

thank you for reminding me about Justin Finch-Flecthley. I totally forgot about that. I also forgot about the beaty potion but it makes since that it would work like a love potion just in a different way. instead of giving the potion to the one you love you could drink a special beauty potion ( THE ONLY THING THAT LOCKHART ACTUALLY DID HIMSELF, IF THIS IS TRUE) that woud make others love you. But what if he made it poorly and boys or most boys had something that could fight off the potion. What do you think WitBeyondMeasure

You asked us to make a playlist for what Harry and Ron would listen to in the car goin to Hogwarts so mine is just one song:
Gotta Get Back To Hogwarts!- Starkid.
- TootsieNoodles453 on September 25 2012 05:34 PM

When Ron first attended Hogwarts he used an old wand from his brother Charlie. It's the summer following that he gets his own wand. And Ollivander makes a new wand for Luna after they're released from Malfoy Manor.

I think maybe you could have multiple wands if you break the one you own, and all would most likely be the same wood and same core.

the fact that Harry and the gang always are the only ones at Kings Cross has always surprised me. You could say they it is because they are always very late, but also they haven't met a single wizard in all the six books.
I do actually think their would be a amount of families that goes to 9 3/4 in a other way then Kings Cross. A parent could do side-along apparating with one child and a trunk. And most of the parents would just apparate back home from 9 3/4 instead of going to Kings Cross again. Their probably would also be fireplaces, but I don't think they are used a lot. Because really, travelling with a huge trunk in the fire doesn't seem a very good idea to me. But the parents could floo back home.
And about the Hogwarts Express suddenly appearing. I think the train is hided for muggles, so Harry en Ron were able to see it. A muggle wouldn’t see anything at all, or the train would be made to look like a modern train.

I do also wonder about the communication in de wizarding world. A lot of people say wizards cannot have phones, because the electricity would not work with all the magic around. But they do use radio’s a lot. How would those work? On some sort of magical energy or magical batteries. Definitely not on electricity, because the wizards don’t have plugs.

In the third book Ron is actually calling Harry with a phone. Would Arthur have tweaked this phone that it would be able to work on magical energy, before Ron was calling Harry?
The closest that comes to a phone (that is not a actual phone) in the wizarding world is the mirror from James and Sirius. I think this is a really good communicating system. It’s a bit like Skype on a mirror. If wizards would tweak it in a way that you could communicate with more people who also have that a kind of mirror, it comes really close to a phone. That would be really nice for fast en short communication when you are away from home. Because the wizarding communications do lack at that point. Especially for wizard children and the stupid incapable wizards (Lockhart..).

But maybe the wizarding world isn’t using very modern devices, because they just walk behind a bit. The whole world is pretty old-fashioned and they also are a bit stubborn. They think along the lines of: ‘we have magic so we don’t need all the electronic devices like those muggles do.’

Last, there was one short thing I noticed in de herbology class. And that is the fast amount of point Hermoine gets for two very short good answers, twenty point in total. Here again, we see that the point system is a bit weird.
- Cissy Flower on September 28 2012 03:38 PM

Two things I noticed:
About wizarding jobs: Dan (I think) said something about how it would be really difficult for a wizard to be a scientist, because there isn't anywhere for them to study science. We've heard JKR say multiple times that wizarding society is stuck in the past. From the middle ages till about the eighteenth century, most scientists and artists were nobles, as they were the only ones who had time to think since they didn't have to work all day. I can picture someone like Lucius wandering around a manor all day with nothing to do, who notices some aspect of magic or magical creatures and has the leisure to study it.
About Hermione and Lockhart: part of the reason why she's so infatuated with Lockhart (aside from the fact that he's famous, good-looking and writes books, and the fact that Hermione is only twelve) is, I think, because he's an ideal of what she'd love to be--someone who is respected for their magical abilities and cleverness. Hermione's always been the nerdy kid, ridiculed and rejected by most. She isn't really best friends with Harry and Ron yet. To her, Lockhart probably seems like a person who's accepted because of his brains--exactly who Hermione would love to be.
- suprememugwump on September 30 2012 01:15 AM

PatronusThestral?

Actually, come to think of it, the only boys who were described as hating Lockhart were mostly Gryffindors. Maybe the people with the strongest wills were put in Gryffindor.
- WitBeyondMeasure on September 30 2012 08:12 AM

I don't think breaking a wand in half would give you two useful wands. Wand length is an important quality in a wand, and has to be perfectly exact. While the two broken halves might work, they would only work as well as the blackthorn wand worked for Harry.
- WitBeyondMeasure on September 30 2012 08:19 AM

When wondering if muggles would be able to see the Hogwarts Express pulling out of King's Cross I was reminded of the Leakey Cauldron in the Sorcerer's Stone. It's in London but muggles don't even notice or realize it’s there but wizard's can see it. I would imagine that the Hogwart's express is working under the same kind of charm. It’s magic right under muggle’s noses.
- MidnightSickle36 on October 02 2012 07:53 PM

In reference to Hermione thinking "they had now been punished enough" after their stolen car joyride is not really about her disapproval (because she never really *says* she disapproves, the boys just assume it based on, well, what they know about Hermione and her likely behavior). Maybe she's just aggravated by the fact that she was left alone on the train because they weren't there. Who'd she spend her time with? Ginny? Neville? Was she alone? Is this when she met Luna? Obviously, Hermione as Plays-By-The-Rules Granger would be disapproving, but the Hermione who misses her only friends might be feeling just a little bit hurt, too, and her desire to see them punished might stem from that. Just a thought.

Sorry...typo. The first part as it should be:

In reference to Hermione thinking "they had now been punished enough" after their stolen car joyride, maybe it's not really about her disapproval...[And the rest as it is. Sorry.]
