The Swelling Solution
I’ve just done some research on something Rosie brought up during this episode; she wondered whether the Swelling Solution was a “real� potion because it seems like such an odd, (and pointless,) thing to want to make a part of your body swell. And I agreed with her, so I decided to look in to it… Well, I’ve actually discovered a recent (2010) study that was done where swelling seems to have been beneficial. For some injuries, (mainly muscle related,) we don’t want to decrease swelling, because it seems that the swelling brought on naturally may help the injury heal more effectively over the long run than if you had reduced the swelling immediately. This is what I have gleaned from my extremely quick research: when a part of your body swells, most people know that the first thing you’re supposed to do is to put ice on the injury, rest, and elevate the injury for the quickest possible recovery. For example: if you’ve twisted your ankle playing tennis and know you have a big match in a few days, you’re going to put all your efforts into healing your ankle quickly. Well, it seems that during the swelling process, cells called macrophages digest the damaged cells and may help speed muscle regeneration. So, if you reduce the swelling, you remove the chance of these cells helping your ankle recover. This seems to mean that you either are in pain/discomfort for a while and then later on you’re better or, you’re fine for the moment but, in 6-12 months you’ll be having trouble. So, it’s sort of a catch 22. There is still a lot of research to be done on this evidently, so this is by no means a perfect answer to this issue. But, I must admit, I thought I would find zero results in looking up this topic so, I have to say that it’s plausible that wizards have got something here. Who knows if this is actually why Jo made this up though, (especially since this study only came out two years ago.) Personally, I think it was just for the humor factor of seeing Malfoy walking around with a nose like a melon. Because, hey, who wouldn’t want to see that?!

In response to Pygmypuff94: Wow! I never would have thought of that! At first, I can imagine Snape being Sorted into any House other than Hufflepuff. Snape is loyal and hardworking, but he certainly isn't just or kind. After all, he treated Harry horribly merely because he had hated James. But, if we are ruling out Hufflepuff, it seems logical that we would rule out Gryffindor. Many Hatstalls that I know personally are between Gryffindor and Hufflepuff. In my opinion, if Snape isn't a Hufflepuff, he isn't a Gryffindor. I think the main difference between Snape and an ordinary Gryffindor is that the unnamed Gryffindor would most likely be both brave and noble, while Snape is certainly very brave, but he is anything but noble. As for Ravenclaw, Snape is certainly very smart, as we discover in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, but he is by no means witty. So, I think that Snape absolutely belongs in Slytherin, and was most likely not a Hatstall.
