Podcast Question of the Week

Episode 16 of Alohomora! is about to be released - one of our longest episodes yet. As per usual, here's our posed question of the week!

The Diary Horcrux, the first piece of Voldemort's soul we encounter in the series, seems essentially different from the other Horcruxes and potentially more powerful. Like a Pensieve, it can store memories and absorb you into them. In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets the Horcrux manipulates young Ginny Weasley, releases the ancient Basilisk, and nearly orchestrates its escape from the diary containing it.

Our question for all you listeners out there is this - why is it that the Diary Horcrux is so much more powerful than its brethren (the other Horcruxes)? Is it because this was Voldemort's first Horcrux - therefore containing a greater share of his original soul? Or is it because young Tom Riddle once poured his soul into it in the form of diary entries, and the Horcrux was made more powerful due to the deep personal significance it had? Perhaps you have a different suggestion to explain its incredible power!

Some responses to this question will be read on the next episode of Alohomora!

I've always thought that when Voldemort made his first horcrux it held a larger chunk than those made after. The only reason I would say this is because when the horcrux is first described to us, it is illustrated by Slughorn as: "Well, you split your soul, you see, and hide part of it in an object outside the body." He didn't mention how large that fragment would be, so I always assumed that at first it would be half of his soul, then a quarter, and then an eighth of what once was. However what stops this theory is the fact that Nagini was the last horcrux made, and she would have only contained an extremely small portion of Voldemort's soul, and yet the snake is connected to him in a very intimate fashion. They can hear each other's thoughts, and Voldemort can even possess the snake, as he did Harry at one point. So perhaps it is the personal significance he gives on the horcrux, or else how much he allows himself at the current time to connect the two souls together-his and the fragment in the horcrux. The more intimate he gets with the horcrux, the more the two souls come closer together with power like two magnets attracted to each other.

I think it's a combination of both. We all know that being a teenager contains a lot of thoughts because this is the stage in life where we find ourselves as individuals. Since, it is Voldemort's diary, it contains (i reckon) to be his thoughts during his teenage years thus letting anyone see his life when he was just a teenager. Since it is his first horcrux, I also think that most of his soul is inside that diary.

And looking at it, the diary is the only horcrux that is personally his. If you look at the other horcruxes, they were owned by other witches and wizards before he got it, just like the locket, ring, diadem and cup. Nagini, is a living creature (making something we thought impossible become possible) and Harry, on the other hand, was an accident horcrux. The diary is not really the glamorous trophy that Tom wanted, but it is something that truly he owns from the very start. Meaning, the diary was not tainted with other magic from a previous owner making Tom's soul easily fit into the diary.

I think the power of a Horcrux has a lot to do with the object chosen to become a Horcrux. Out of the seven Horcruxes, you could arguably say that the diary, Nagini, and Harry are the most powerful considering the extent of the damage Voldemort's soul causes through them. The one thing these three Horcruxes all have in common with one another is communication: they are all capable of instant communication with people (slightly less so for Nagini as she is limited to fellow Parselmouths) and they have extreme capacities for working with memories and the mind. The other Horcruxes don't seem to have these possibilities not because they are less powerful, but because a ring, a cup, a diadem, and a locket can't talk. Yes, the locket does communicate in some senses with Ron as it gets into his mind/emotions the way the diary does with Ginny, but we don't actually see it working to same level of invasion like the diary does until it is at it's most vulnerable position - about to be killed by Ron. The diary, however, is invasive and explosive from the get-go the minute Ginny starts putting herself into it.

To go on a bit further with this idea, we do see that the locket has the ability to greatly affect a person, just as much so as the diary does, when we see how much it changes the Trio in Book 7. However, look how long that took! It was a very long while before the locket had worked its way into Ron enough to make him actually leave the group, whereas the diary gives Harry instantaneous "answers" and memories the moment ink hits the page. I really feel communication and the type of object used is key to determining a Horcrux's power.

A lot of comments have been saying that it depends on how large or long the connection has been to the object that is being made a Horcrux. Which would make sense - the Diary was a large part of Young Tom's life and - perhaps arguably - the first Horcrux he ever made.

However, another possibility I would think is the perhaps it has something to do not only with how split his soul has already been - and how corrupt he is at the time of making it (ie - how much evil has he already done, how MANY has he killed.) Obviously, to make a Horcrux, we are told you have to kill someone - do something so horrendous that it can cleave the soul. If the diary was his first Horcrux, then his first victim - Myrtle - would have arguably been his first human kill. Torturing and killing pets is something very different than killing a human being - it brings a whole new step into his become a emotionless monster.

If Myrtle is his first 'kill', even though he uses the Basilisk to do it - that is still a huge deal. And he is still very young when he does it - in his teens. That would make it the biggest 'cleave' to his soul. As he goes on down the line with other people, to create other Horcruxes, obviously killing will have become a novelty to him - It's not as wrenching the first time as it is the seventh (or, seeing as it's Voldemort, probably the 30th or 40th) you kill someone.

First off, I am not entirely certain that the diary was the first horcrux that Voldemort created. As Dumbledore points out, the diary concerned him because it was left about casually, which one wouldn't do with a one-and-only horcrux.

I believe that Voldemort's first horcrux was the ring. During his conversation with Slughorn, Tom is wearing the ring, indicating that he had already killed his father and grandparents. He wore the ring for a time until he created the horcrux. Then he hid it in the Gaunt shack.

Two things come into play here. First off, it doesn't seem as though the horcrux must be created right at the time of a murder. It seems that it can be put off. So, Voldemort did kill 3 people at the Riddle house. Perhaps one of those murders could've served for the diary, and not Moaning Myrtle, as is commonly thought.

I feel as though Voldemort created the diary after his conversation with Slughorn, and I think it may be different because he created it with the intention of using it as a weapon. Certainly, Lucius Malfoy knows how the diary can work. Even though he does not know it is a horcrux, he does know that it can be used to open the Chamber.
- Silverdoe25 on November 20 2012 12:43 PM

I would think that as the first Horcrux made, it would be the largest. However, seeing how much power Voldemort has over Nagini, I think the immense strength of even a fraction of the soul of such and evil wizard would not make the difference between its ability to posess people and an inablility to do so. The locket does greatly affect the trio in book 7, though it does not possess them like the diary took over Ginny. I suppose you could argue that this would make it less powerful, but I don't see why the locket would need to posess them. The diary went for Ginny because its purpose was to open the Chamber of Secrets, anyone who gives it a chance is at risk. Hermione explains how Horcruxes can posess people in Deathly Hallows: "While the magical container is still intact, the bit of soul inside it can flit in and out of someone if they get too close to the object. I don't mean holding it for too long, it's nothing to do with touching it....I mean close emotionally. Ginny poured her heart out into that diary, she made herself incredibly vulnerable."
As to the question of Tom pouring his soul in the form of diary entries, I must respond with a question: Can you really imagine Lord Voldemort writing in a diary? I think he'd see it as girly and muggle-like, too inferior for someone like him. So I don't think diary entries gave it power. I think the importance of the knowledge makes it a bit more powerful. This diary is proof that Voldemort was the heir of Slytherin- that meant a lot to him. I think it's this significance that would give the diary power if emotion can strengthen a Horcrux.
- Hermione Lovegood on November 20 2012 12:56 PM

I think the diary was just like any other horcrux, with an equal amount of soul and emotion. We don’t really know the properties of the other horcruxs, but the locket almost possessed Ron. However the diary was unique because it was intended as a weapon, that’s why Riddle made it a muggle diary so innocent people would pick it up and open the chamber.
- advance owl purr on November 20 2012 04:37 PM

(I'm just adding to my last comment) the diary was also like a penisive for the same reason. so when you make a horcrux you can give it properties.
- advance owl purr on November 20 2012 04:39 PM

I think Harry's the most powerful horcrux that Voldemort created and the one to defeat him in the end.
- prairiedances on November 21 2012 11:36 AM

Voldemort doesn't like relying on having things that could be easily destroyed and such. To him probably having a diary in which to confide in probably shows signs of weakness as it shows the need to talk to somebody. Thus showing it would be quite out of character if Voldemort had a diary he wrote. Not. Only this but if anyone found this it could be easily used against him, Surely there were many students at Hogwarts that despised Voldemort as a teen.

But I do agree with the fact that the diary does have half of Voldemort's soul as it is the first. But I think that this is easy to point out as none of the other horcruxes try to attempt things on there own. (such as Tom Riddle coming out of the diary) Also Voldemort probably stratigically created the diary first. As he created it as a diary so someone like Ginny could come along and pour there hearts out to it. As one of the reasons he created it was so he could reopen the Chamber because he knew he couldn't do it while he was still at Hogwarts,
- Golden Snidget on November 23 2012 11:05 AM

I think that Riddle exuded more power through his diary than his other horcruxes because he was more aware of himself inside it. His other objects were merely stolen trophies. He poured all his twisted thoughts and feelings into a muggle diary (which is ironic considering that he used it to harm muggle-borns) and because of all the anxieties he felt about not knowing who is parents were at this point he felt more hatred and insecurity when making this horcrux than the other ones. In my opinion because of how significant he felt HIS thoughts were; superior to everyone else's, the diary would have reflected this by being really powerful.
- siriouslymagic on November 24 2012 07:24 AM

The diary presented a different opportunity to whoever had it because instead of just being an object, it gave you the opportunity to put yourself into it. The trio knew that they had horcruxes when they had the locket, cup, etc, but Ginny was not aware of what she was dealing with. I'm sure a diary that would communicate back with you would be a great temptation to a young girl, as she would have an instant confidant. She could tell Tom anything and he would sympathize with her and be interested in anything she had to stay. What a dangerous object for a naive young girl! Tom could only posses Ginny because she allowed it. She gave him part of her soul, and therefore she trusted him. It was the vulnerability and trust from Ginny that made the diary such a powerful horcrux, not the order in which is was created.
- knowitallgranger on November 24 2012 07:59 AM

On the question of the week, I feel that the diary is not that much powerful than the other Horcruxes, it simply worked with a more dramatic effect. The diary Riddle did not really do anything on its own, it simply had the Basilisk at its disposal. I think any other Horcrux could have created a similar persona if at all necessary. Diary Riddle only did this to get to Harry. In all other situations, Harry was already in his grasp.
- alex24601 on November 24 2012 11:54 AM

I feel like the diary Horcrux was more personal somewhat to Riddle. It was his first Horcrux, and if it had not been made into a Horcrux, it would have been worth very little.

I've always had an idea of Riddle splitting his soul in half every time he made a Horcrux, so the fragment of his soul would be smaller each time he did it. Also, the diary gave anyone the opportunity to actually write in it so the Horcrux would be able to 'get to know' the person and take control of that person's soul. The other Horcruxes didn't have that effect.

Perhaps it could also be the fact that no one knew it was a Horcrux until it was too late. The trio knew a Horcrux when they saw one in the later books, but this early on it was harder to tell.
- cloverlover on November 25 2012 03:51 PM

I disagree with most of the commentary. I believe the soul is immaterial (which is also put forth by JKR in the discussion about a sword hurting the body but not the soul), thus there is no regard for how many times it is split, the soul still has no mass and the "strength" of each of the Horcruxes would be the same.

What is interesting is this mass-less entity can be ripped apart and damaged. Perhaps the more damaged and unstable it becomes, the less "strong" it can be considered. Perhaps a soul is essentially energy - and that its energy can be repaired and returned to its original state. Pure speculation on my part and would probably be taken to task by a few people versed in metaphysics.

I do submit, though, that the soul has no mass and therefore no one part is larger than the other.
