Lovely analysis! I'm a Hufflepuff in heart, Ravenclaw as a result of Pottermore sorting. I've noticed my competitive nature comes out as a Ravenclaw. After reading your essay, I wonder if Cedric wasn't the same....at a Hufflepuff with a competitive streak. Competitive is not the primary Hufflepuff trait so that may be why there aren't that many in the headlines. They seem to excel in the foundations of our communities...they are what is needed to keep communities strong - just, loyal, patient and willing to work hard - not conniving, rash, or fly-by-night! And you gave excellent examples of strong Hufflepuff wizards.
In response to the first review, JKR says that it is a "rough idea" to the "intellectual reputation" of the house. Reputation, not fact. After all, to FIND things, you have to have an agile mind for observation, yes? Keep up the badger love, we need everyone to feel it!
Yes, you're right -Hufflepuff does play a part of Hogwarts. But you see, it's funny to me at least. I quote from brother, who quotes from true words of JKR herself through website; "Houses intelligence is rated on how much their password changes."
And, though I don't know myself being a Ravenclaw, it is to my knowledge that is says that Hufflepuffs have a 'beat' or 'musical pattern' whatever you want to call it... My point is, it is said that the 'beat' never changes. Gryffindors have their password changing regularly -slytherins also. Ravenclaws have 'quiz questions' that also change regulary.
Can't you at least see humour?
Oh, I just love this! Being a hufflepuff myself I know that I relate perfectly to the traits - not just because JK Rowling said so, but because I know that I am exactly what Hufflepuff is said to be. And its not the attack of the Hufflepuff house that hurts - its the fact that the traits that are in me, and make me who I am, are hated on. That, because I'm loyal and honest, hardworking an fair, I'm somehow incompetant and....useless? Weak? Stupid? those are some of the claims that I've seen in my very own common room from my very own house "mates". And does it hurt to be told that because I have some good in me - other than immodest bravery, immodest cunning and immodest brains - I'm not as good a person as those who don't value goodness over their boasting? Does that hurt? Of course it does! people are telling us puffs that our good qualities aren't good enough. And they forget that Hufflepuffs aren't fictional characters anymore. They're real people - and those comments are now directed at us, not those characters on a page. Thank you for this article. It makes it a little easier
Thank you for writing this. I'm a proud Hufflepuff as well, but I can't just lie down and take abuse like so many of my housemates can. (which isn't the most hufflepuffly thing to do, but oh well.)
But thank you, you have saved me from writing a very long, tedious, rant.
here, here! I am proud to be a Hufflepuff, not only in Pottermore, but the COS forum.
Agreed! Even though I'm not a Hufflepuff, I didn't decide that I wasn't so because I didn't want to be in the House, but because I knew that I didn't live up to the qualities of it. I'm much too impatient and hot-headed to be anything but a Gryffindor.
I think much of the Cedric-hate comes from Twilight-hate because of Pattinson. Harry is the only person to ever have gone up against Voldemort and lived, we can't discredit Cedric (a 17 year old boy) because he was killed by a Death Eater.
I've noticed an uptick in 'Puff love recently. Perhaps it's because Pottermore has forced some people to acknowledge their true House, or we're just growing up as a fanbase, but I do think it'll get better and has gotten better. Nevertheless, I want you to know that you have at least one Gryff on your side. Hufflepuff's an awesome House (and you're good finders).
Agreed! I don't think Hufflepuffs get enough credit.
I love this defense. I'm sure Hufflepuffs everywhere would be proud to read it. Don't you think?
Very similar to what i said in my quibble, The Marring of the Hufflepuff Name. I completely agree that Hufflepuff is just as good as the other houses, and I'm not even a Hufflepuff!
We've talked a lot about where the curse of unicorn blood comes from, but just what exactly is the curse?! That's what this Quibble seeks to find out!
I'm back with more of my thoughts and questions that I had while re-reading the Harry Potter books. This time from Chapters 1 & 2 of Chamber of Secrets.
I pair up characters with magical creatures that are like them.

This is an essay I wrote for school comparing and contrasting the lives of Harry and Voldemort. It starts with their childhoods and continues until the end of the books.
